A site about privacy should practise it. This policy explains what personal information History killer collects, why, and what you can do about it. The short version: we collect as little as we can, we don’t sell anything, and we don’t use advertising trackers.
The site is run by [Owner name or business name] (“we”, “us”), who is responsible for your information under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018). You can contact us at [contact@yourdomain.com].
1. What we collect and why
Server logs
Like every website, our web host, [hosting company], automatically records basic details of each visit: your IP address, the page requested, the date and time, your browser’s user-agent string and the referring page. These logs are used to keep the site running and secure, for example to spot attacks. They’re kept for [30] days, then deleted. Our lawful basis is legitimate interests: running a working, secure website.
The connection trace
The front page shows you details your browser sends, such as your IP address, browser, platform, languages, time zone and screen size. This is worked out when the page loads and shown only to you. It isn’t saved to our database or used to identify you. The ISP hostname is found with a standard reverse-DNS lookup of your IP address.
Comments
If you leave a comment, we store the name, email address and comment you enter, along with your IP address and browser user-agent string, which help us detect spam. Your name and comment are shown publicly; your email address and IP address are not. You don’t have to use your real name. Our lawful basis is consent, given when you choose to post.
Comments are kept until you ask us to delete them or we remove them. Comments marked as spam are deleted after [15] days.
Emails you send us
If you email us or use our Contact page, we keep your message and email address so we can reply. We delete correspondence after [12] months unless we need it for an ongoing matter.
2. Cookies
We don’t use advertising or analytics cookies. WordPress may set these strictly necessary cookies:
- Comment cookies: if you tick the box to save your details when commenting, your name and email are stored in your browser for one year, so you don’t have to retype them.
- Login cookies: only for site administrators who log in.
The connection trace may remember small display preferences in your browser’s local storage. Nothing there is sent back to us.
3. Third-party services
When your browser loads the site, some content may come from other companies, which then receive your IP address:
- Fonts: [Our fonts are hosted on our own server, so no third party is contacted.] / [Our fonts are loaded from Google Fonts. See Google’s privacy policy.]
- Spam filtering (optional): comments are checked by [Akismet], which receives the comment details listed above. See their privacy policy.
- Embedded content: articles may embed videos or other content from sites such as YouTube. These behave as if you visited that site directly and may track you. Where possible we use privacy-enhanced embed modes.
Links to other sites, including affiliate or merchandise links, take you to services with their own privacy policies. We may learn that a purchase was made through an affiliate link, but not who made it.
4. What we don’t do
- We don’t sell, rent or trade your personal information.
- We don’t use advertising networks, tracking pixels or cross-site trackers.
- We don’t build profiles of visitors or make automated decisions about you.
We only share information if the law requires it, or with the service providers named above, who handle it on our behalf.
5. Where your information is stored
The site is hosted in [country/region]. If any service provider processes your information outside the UK, we make sure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as UK adequacy regulations or standard contractual clauses.
6. Security
The site is served over an encrypted HTTPS connection. We keep WordPress and its plugins updated, limit who has administrator access, and use strong, unique passwords with two-factor authentication. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect what we hold.
7. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct information that’s wrong;
- ask us to delete your information, including your comments;
- object to or ask us to restrict how we use it;
- withdraw consent at any time, where consent is our lawful basis;
- receive your information in a portable format.
To make a request, email [contact@yourdomain.com]. We’ll reply within one month. There’s no charge.
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk. We’d appreciate the chance to sort it out first.
8. Children
The site isn’t aimed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we’ll delete it.
9. Changes to this policy
We’ll update this page if our practices change. The “Last updated” date at the top shows when it last changed. Significant changes will also be noted on the site.
